The children and whanau at BestStart Mahora have been working hard on collecting the vegetable gardens at the supermarket, this has given the children an exciting experience to look forward too. Toni our teacher has decided it would be a great idea to get the children to plant the seeds and watch them grow. As our gardens are looking fantastic now, we want to nurture and care for them, teach the children about Papatuanuku and how we care for our environment, we are also working hard on our healthy heart award.

Over the last few months our tamariki have been interested in vegetables and learning about caring for our environment. Today the children gathered the little garden vegetables from the supermarket and planted them with Toni our teacher.  They have been seeing the progress from planting our vegetables from bunnings and how much they have been enjoying the taste of the lettuce, carrots, and spring onions. We are so excited to see these vegetables grow ways on promoting healthy choices and keeping healthy through eating yummy vegetables and fruits.

It great to see the learning happening with the children, to taking turns, learning about what vegetables look like and what they might taste like, learning about what we need to do to look after our vegetables we need water, and care to help them grow, Theo looked at the sticker on the back of the vegetable pot and knew straight away it’s a passionfruit , he then went over to the pot and found a passionfruit pot, it’s great to see through this experience children are recognising letters and symbols and pictures .
