Our recent visit from Plunket provided a valuable opportunity to connect health perspectives with our early childhood curriculum. Plunket’s focus on child health, growth, and development complemented our centre philosophy, which is grounded in building whanaungatanga and supporting the overall wellbeing of each child.
Within our local curriculum, inspired by toetoe as a metaphor for growth, we view children as developing at their own pace—much like toetoe thriving in its natural environment. The Plunket visit reinforced the importance of nurturing this growth through responsive care, strong relationships, and holistic support.
Their guidance around health checks, nutrition, and developmental milestones aligned with our practices of observing, documenting, and responding to each child’s unique needs. This experience also strengthened our understanding of how health and education work together to support tamariki.
It encouraged deeper conversations with families, promoting shared knowledge and consistent care between home and centre. By fostering open communication and trust, we continue to build meaningful partnerships that enhance children’s sense of belonging.
The collaboration highlighted how partnerships between families, health services, and educators strengthen outcomes for tamariki. By weaving Plunket knowledge into our daily practices, we continue to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where children feel a strong sense of belonging, develop resilience, and flourish physically, emotionally, and socially.
