Promoting Sustainability at BestStart Dannemora

In BestStart Dannemora, sustainability lies in our centre's strategic plan and we embed it in children’s daily play and activities. We believe that sustainability is the quality of the process and it allows children to learn to be environmentally responsible.

In our preschool and kindy room, we love to use recycled materials to create new “toys” and activities. The natural materials are always there for our tamariki to explore and play with. It is pleasing to see how our tamariki show curiosity and make conscious decisions about the materials they use and how they use them in play.

Sustainability learning also occurs when our tamariki explore and form links with nature. Our vegetable and fruit garden is the perfect place for our children to experience, connect with, and learn from nature. Using stories and books to facilitate discussions with our tamariki on sustainable challenges and practices has been encouraging teachers and tamariki to be responsible and care for the environment.

This learning journey at BestStart Dannemora is an ongoing journey, and we have seen it is an important part of our center curriculum and plan. Importantly, our tamariki are involved in enhancing their knowledge of the importance of protecting the environment and respecting nature.
