As part of our Halloween celebration we thought the children might like to help us carve a pumpkin. We have not done this at preschool previously so thought it might be a new fun experience the children could enjoy together. We started off by talking about what we were going to do with the pumpkin and getting all the equipment ready that we were going to need. We chopped the top of the pumpkin off and role modelled with a spoon how to scoop the pumpkin and seeds out. Next it was time for the children to have a turn. At first the children took turns using a couple of spoons to scoop it out but after a while we decided it was much more fun scooping it out with our hands. The children worked together to scoop the inside of the pumpkin out with their hands. Once it was empty it was time to draw the face on and then the children watched as the face was carved out. Once it was all done it was put up on the shelf ready for our dress up day at the end of the week.

Through this experience the children were able to work together towards a shared goal – making a pumpkin face. They took turns scooping the inside of the pumpkin and shared the spoons when we first started carving. The children were able to share their knowledge and ideas with one another about pumpkins and share stories they had about how they have celebrated Halloween at home. This was a great way for the children to extend their relationships with each other through fun experiences.
