Here at BestStart Kamo Central we have been lucky enough to work alongside Amber from Te Puna poipoia and be involved in a pumpkin growing competition with a group of centres throughout northland. We were provided with giant pumpkin seeds for the tamariki to plant and nurture. This was such an awesome rewarding experience for our tamariki. They gained a sense of responsibility for the living world and knowledge about how to care for it. They became so excited each morning to go and check on the pumpkins and see if they had grown. This also led to the tamariki learning about bees as when our plants flowered, they noticed the bees flying in to gather the pollen. This lead to many korero about how bees are beneficial to our garden and help pollinate our plants. We did however have a few setbacks as our first few pumpkins that started to grow got eaten. We did not let this deter us, we kept persevering and ended up with not one but two giant pumpkins. Unfortunately, we did not win the competition but we did come in second with our biggest pumpkin weighing 18.6kgs! We also won a prize for all our outstanding efforts.
