Puppet Play
Our tamariki have a keen interest in manipulative play at the moment. To add a new element to their play, we made our own puppets using socks. With some googly eyes, pompoms and fabric scraps, our odd socks collection turned into wonderful puppets.
With the use of the hand puppets, children develop their develop hand, eye, arm, finger and body coordination and dexterity. They also use it to express their feelings and enhances language development.
To further extend their interest in puppet play, we also made stick puppets of their favourite story of The Very hungry caterpillar. Identifying their puppets offered them opportunities to increase their vocabulary. To add more fun, the stick puppets were used in a puppet show. Watching a puppet show provided them a different medium of storytelling apart from the usual book reading or listening to audio books.
Puppets present so many possibilities for learning. This encourages them to retell the story, share their ideas, play with words and manipulate with their hands. These puppets will surely be around for a while or maybe a regular part of our mat time. Our tamariki have a lot more fun learning with them so come, join us and have fun with our puppets too.
