Nā te moa i takahi te rāt

Early influences will last throughout life, take care of the young.

In the extension room, some children have been showing an interest in strengthening their literacy skills as they prepare to head off for their school years. When a child copies their name, it requires them to carefully look at the shape of the letters and reproduce it. By doing this they are working with mathematical concepts even though they are writing letters. They are also imprinting in their brain their own code of what their name lookers look like, programming their own brains. Being purposeful when writing is the most important part because without this they would not grow as a life long learner.

Here at BestStart Cranford street we thrive on providing children opportunities to explore the learning that they lead, teachers know and observe what children are interested in and help to scaffold their learning further to support these skills and abilities. Teachers plan with intention to support children to enhance and develop these skills, and also encourage other children to join and participate if they would like to.

We are so proud of our extension children for always trying new tasks and growing as competent and confident learners.
