Race to the Mountain

At Portage Road Kindy we are so fortunate to have Mt Richmond / Ōtāhuhu right in our backyard. As one of Auckland's many volcanoes, we felt it important to connect to our local maunga and share some knowledge with our tamariki of its history during a kindy excursion. Excursions are great opportunities to provide tamariki with new experiences which increases their understanding of the world around them.

We had discussions around landmarks on Mt Richmond / Ōtāhuhu such as the Pa, craters and areas where stone had been quarried. Prior to the trip we also discussed safety and hazards as we would be walking along a path through some forestry as well as areas where vehicles would be moving. This provided opportunities around developing managing risk and keeping oneself safe, it also helped the children to learn about the community they live in and how they can be part of taking care of it.

We were very fortunate to have amazing whanau support and the trip was enjoyed by all. At the end of our trip, we returned to Kindy, happy, a bit tired, and ready for a delicious shared kai.
