Rahui 2020
At BestStart Parklands recently we joined New Zealand in a nationwide lockdown, or Rahui 2020 as it is now commonly known. We approached this as a fantatstic oppourtunity to build on the current relationships we had with our whanau, and tamariki in our BestStart Parkalnds whanau. Right from the beginning we wanted to continue supporting our whanau at home, through at home learning. Storypark and Zoom were fantastic platforms, for us to continue using over this time. From the very beginning we offered whanau daily activities, using items or ingredients most whanau would have in their pantry at home. The staff grabbed this new way of learning online with both hands, and recorded themselves at home doing activities such as story times, science experiments, art and crafts and so much more. We also created activity packs to send home to our whanau, these included activity sheets, and arts and crafts with all resources included in the pack to create these.
We had some great conversations and video calls with our tamariki at home too! and they shared photos of what they did as a whanau over rahui with us. We believe we formed stronger relationships with our whanau over this time, and we contiue to build on these today. We found continuing on with these relationships during rahui, and being very visual and having a strong presence online over this time with our tamariki this made the transition back to peschool after 7 weeks very smooth for all our whanau. We are so pleased to have everyone back in the centre now, and things are back to normal we are all enjoying being back at Parklands together.
