What do rainy days look like at BestStart Sir Tristram Ave?  JENGA!  - Who doesn't love a good game of Jenga?

It was raining outside and in our whero room (pre-school room) we went into the resource cupboard and picked out some rainy day games.  Jarvis decided on Jenga.

We were curious about where jenga came from.  We discovered that Jenga is originated from the Swahili word Kujenga meaning “to build,” to us it’s more than just building a tower of blocks. It’s about building patience, relationships, and decision making.  Other wonderful benefits of the game of jenga, besides fun, jenga supports manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and balance. It can improve children's ability to work in teams, help them learn math, science and creative skills, and even strengthen bonds with friends and family.

Just as quickly as the Jenga towers were being built with precise decision-making, the conversations were building with the tamariki. Rainy day games like this encourages relationships. With each block withdrawn from the tower, a goal, initiative, strategy, and risk taking has to be taken.  It didn’t take the tamariki long to discover that we had to find the loosest block, however even if we did move the looses block the tower sometimes fell down amidst lots of laugher.  When the tower fell down, teachers are able to remind tamariki that some times things don’t always go to plan and to start again.

We have added a few links to some websites that have some great wet day activities...
