At BestStart Lemon Street sustainability and recycling is an important practice for us. Tamariki develop an understanding of sustainability by learning about reducing, re-using and recycling. Tamariki are offered meaningful and authentic moments to apply this throughout our curriculum.

Recently we found a use for some cardboard tubes that had been bought in by one of our families, this provided us with the opportunity to re-use these for a different purpose.  One of our Kaiako carefully cut them in half then we fastened them to the fence out in the playground. To use as a ball and car run.   We had to use our scientific and mathematic skills to work out where the best place was for them to be put up so the balls and cars could run down the tubes without falling to the ground mid-way. The Tamariki soon figured out that the cars travelled down the tube faster than the balls. Te Whāriki recognises this under the strand of exploration as Tamariki see their play as meaningful learning and the importance of spontaneous play is recognised.
