Today was a special day in our classroom as we welcomed Casey from Tauranga City Council to share her knowledge and enthusiasm about recycling.
The children were immediately drawn into the experience, showing curiosity and excitement as they explored a variety of hands-on activities made from recycled materials.
They tested their coordination and problem-solving skills by aiming balls into the mouth of a milk bottle monster and launching them into the air with a Coke bottle shooter.
These playful challenges sparked laughter and teamwork, while also reinforcing the idea that everyday items can be reused in creative and meaningful ways. Casey read us a beautifully illustrated book by a New Zealand author, which told the story of how rubbish in the ocean affects sea creatures.
The children listened intently and asked thoughtful questions, showing empathy and concern for the environment. This experience helped deepen our understanding of sustainability and the impact of our choices.
Through this learning experience, our Tamariki were able to develop awareness of recycling and sustainability, while engaged in creative play using recycled materials and practicing fine motor skills and problem-solving.
We will continue exploring ways to reuse materials in our classroom and create a recycling station to encourage ongoing environmental awareness.
