Our tamariki spent weeks leading up to our Matariki whānau evening deeply engaged in meaningful, hands-on learning. Through planting, crafting, painting, and star-making, they explored a range of materials and embraced their creativity. These experiences were rich, open-ended, and connected to the stories and values of the Māori New Year, allowing moments of discovery to unfold naturally. Learning alongside friends and kaiako nurtured confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of belonging. Collaborative exploration reminded us how naturally tamariki learn when creativity, imagination, and connection guide their play.
Rich kōrero with our tamariki helped them unpack the meaning and significance of Matariki, a time of reflection, celebration, and connection. As they experimented with natural materials, created stars, and expressed their ideas through art, they deepened their understanding of its cultural importance. These creative experiences also supported social learning, as tamariki shared ideas, solved problems together, and encouraged one another through each new challenge.
Our tamariki embraced our Matariki waiata with enthusiasm, singing spontaneously as they prepared for their whānau performance. Hearing their voices fill the space with joy and confidence was a beautiful reminder of how naturally they absorb and express new learning. Their excitement showed how music can deepen connection, strengthen cultural understanding, and bring our learning environment to life.
Our Matariki whānau evening gave tamariki the opportunity to proudly share their creative projects, guiding their whānau through the artwork, planting projects, and star creations they had worked so hard on. The sense of community, pride, and togetherness made the evening truly special. It was a celebration not only of Matariki, but also of the relationships, learning, and joy that flourish when tamariki, kaiako, and whānau come together.
