Relationships are a vital part of all our worlds. Within Infant House and BestStart Montessori the Gardens relationships form the basis of everything we do. From the first visit pēpi, tamariki and whānau have, relationships are being established. Building on these relationships during visits and over time we are creating a safe environment and positive space for pēpi and tamariki to grow and develop.

Our philosophy says, “We foster the concept of whanaungatanga where responsive, reciprocal relationships between whānau, kaiako and the community are used to enhance the learning opportunities for each child. These relationships are based upon respect, caring and communication.”

Relationships occur between kaiako, tamariki, pēpi and whānau within Infant House and encompassing the entire centre. We celebrate each other as well as our community recognising birthdays, transitions, events, such as, United Nations day, Māori language week and Gumboot Friday.

Supporting relationships within our community tamariki gave handmade cards to Ross Home residents at Christmas to ensure they knew they were being thought of. A group of tamariki and kaiako visited to deliver them, staying to sing and dance to Christmas waiata. Our tamariki were able to create relationships with the residents and staff and then the bus driver as they caught a bus back to centre.

Our curriculum, Te Whāriki (2017) says, “Children learn through responsive and reciprocal relationships with people, places and things.”
