Here at BestStart St Albans, one aspect of our centre values is empowerment/whakamana.

We believe that our tamariki should be encouraged to manage risks while being in a safe and secure environment that has been presented in a way that represents all ages and stages of development. This week we took the Piwakawaka Room (0-2 year olds) as well as some of the Pukeko Room (2-year-olds) to our local playground.

This playground is located on the same street as our centre so a lot of our tamariki visit this playground with their whanau. Here we were really able to show our value of empowerment as we supported the tamariki with age and stage-appropriate risks on the playground.

Our younger children were pushing their limits in the tunnel, seeing how far from the edge they could go without falling. Our older tamariki were feeling very confident and were swinging off the platforms holding onto the bar above. One of our very brave 1-year-olds challenged themselves as they climbed up the bars all by themselves with a teacher nearby for support.
