Samoa Language Week

Samoa Language Week

We celebrated Samoan Language week with many activities for the tamaiti laiti/young children.

The first thing we learnt about was the Samoan alphabet which has only 14 letters. Our Samoan faiaoga/teacher introduced us to two new songs that the children enjoyed singing at mat time. The children played drum music outside on the drums after listening to some Samoans playing the drums on the iPad.

At mat time, we read some stories about Samoan culture and their way of living. The children painted the Samoa flag, made a ili/fan with the teacher, and painted some coconuts after looking at some pictures of the two different shades of coconuts. We made some flowers using paper. We taught the children some mamanu Samoa/patterns.

On our last day of the week, we all dressed up in Samoan puletasi/dress. The parents dressed up, and some parents brought some Samoan treats for the teachers.

Overall we learnt a lot about the Samoan culture and the language in a short period of time.
