Samoan Language Week at BestStart Cornwall St
During the first week of June, BestStart Cornwall Street celebrated Samoan language week. A cultural display was set up in the foyer to welcome whanau as they entered the centre and included a beautiful traditional Samoan headpiece – Tuiga. Samoan music played from the stereo and several parents could be seen dancing along!
Throughout the week, kaiako came dressed up in traditional Samoan dress – Pea. Lavalavas were also worn and lots of bright colours and patterns could be seen. Our tamariki had the chance to explore a range of Samoan activities, from musical performances to making paper leis. They also loved the opportunity to paint some traditional Samoan stencils.
Towards the end of the week, the Tongererewa room (baby room) and Fetuao room (toddlers) enjoyed a shared lunch of Chop Suey and Taro. A special mat time was also held. Two of our Samoan kaiako, Ana and Miri performed a traditional dance (Taulaga) and the ukulele was played. Our tamariki also had the chance to hear several Samoan songs and loved singing and dancing along to these.
What a great week we all had!
