Samoan Language Week at BestStart Maui Street
Talofa lava from BestStart Maui Street!
We celebrated Samoan Language Week and we had a great opportunity to have Sau, one of our parents, come and share some of her traditions and culture with our tamariki. We included the toddlers as we thought they would enjoy the coconut experience too!
Tamariki were excited to sing the shape song which we learnt a few months ago. We also showed her how well we are at learning and pronouncing animals and words in Samoan through songs. What a great way of learning shapes and songs from other cultures and sharing these experiences alongside one another.
Tamariki also had a chance to learn about Pacific food. We had a coconut breaking and scraping activity which tamariki really enjoyed. Kaiako and tamariki had a chance to grate the coconut and taste the juice and flesh. What a fun day with so much learning!
Lastly, we buried the coconut for 2 weeks to make a bowl called "bilo". We have a few bilo in our nature area and it's been great doing this experience for the 2nd time, learning what is in our nature area and the process of what they are and why we have them in our play environment.
Our vision is, "See me, Know me, Grow me", which is great for us as we are a multicultural centre that enjoys learning about our tamariki cultures.
