Samoan Language Week

1

In the Matai room this week, there was a noticeable increase in both verbal and nonverbal communication among the children. The celebration of Samoan language week brought about a range of engaging activities. The children enthusiastically participated in music and movement sessions, where they danced and sang along to their favorite Samoan songs like "Ulu, Tauau, Tulivae, Tama’ivae" (Head, shoulders, knees, and toes). Although no pictures were taken due to the overwhelming fun, the memories created will surely be cherished. Another exciting activity involved the children creating their own tapa cloth, providing them with a hands-on experience in exploring paint and expressing their creativity. This artistic endeavor not only allowed them to connect with a cultural tradition but also enhanced their fine motor skills. Bubbles became a major highlight of the week, especially on rainy days. The children expressed their joy and excitement by exclaiming "bubble" and "pop" as they played with them. It was heartwarming to witness their clear voices filled with excitement and delight. Additionally, the children engaged in interactive games and imaginative play using a generously donated box. This kind of play not only fostered their social interactions but also encouraged the expression of their thoughts and emotions through various materials and modes. The activities in the Matai room align with the Communication/Mana Reo strand of Te Whāriki, where the children used verbal communication for diverse purposes. Through games and creative play, they had opportunities to express their feelings, ideas, and stories, promoting innovative thinking and communication skills. Overall, the Matai room had a fantastic week filled with laughter, learning, and meaningful experiences that supported the children's holistic development.
