Over the last month in Te Whare we have seen how much our tamariki love sand play.

Due to Covid restrictions the sandpit has been closed and not in use. There was so much excitement when we got the news that we could add this curriculum area back into daily learning.  We have let the children take the lead in what they have wanted to experience in this area.

Each day they are choosing which equipment they want to use, what they want to achieve and whether they want to add another element like water.  We have had giant holes, tunnels, volcanoes, mermaids, sandcastles, co-operative play, sand pies and buried bones.

The children’s imaginations have just run wild!  We love and encourage this type of self-directed learning and watching them working together with others in the sandspit on a shared project develops interactive social skills which are very important.
