In the past month we have been very busy in the baby room exploring with our senses, from painting, to baking, to sensory bags and the sandpit there has been a lot of opportunity to explore. Infants and toddlers learn to explore their world through touch, smell, sight, sound and when safe, taste. Learning through the senses comes naturally from birth and remains crucial to children’s hands-on learning opportunities through their preschool years.

They become familiar with a range of materials, learning about the different textures and properties of materials. By thinking about and deciphering these differences and similarities between objects children are experiencing the beginning of the maths and science concept of classification. Messy play is relaxing and soothing, it can bring children to an awareness of being calm and relaxed. Feeling calm helps children to have a clearer mind which aids positive thinking, concentration, memory and decision-making. Relaxation slows our heart rate, reduces our blood pressure, and relieves tension.

Children develop their hand-eye coordination, as they scoop, pour, mix and measure the mixtures. By the time our babies turn two years old, they have experienced a world of sensory experiences, making new connections in their brains and learning about the world around them.
