During the month of September, our curriculum review focus has been on Sensory Baskets (sometimes called Heuristic Play or Loose parts), this type of play consists of a variety of resources that can be used in a variety of ways. Ngā tamariki are able to make their own choices about how to use the resources, they provide a great way for our tamariki to use their imaginations and to discover how things work, for our younger pepi sensory baskets/kete rongo are a great opportunity for sensory exploration as they often consist of items with different textures.

You can create your own sensory basket/kete rongo at home, some ideas of items you could put in your basket are:

  • Wooden items such as pegs, egg cups, cotton reels, bowls, ringsand, spoons.
  • Metal items such as lengths of chain, ,pots and pans, bowls, sieves
  • Natural items such as pine cones, sheepskin, and coconut shells
  • Other items such as scarves, bangles, bean bags, ribbons
