We all know that Sensory Exploration plays a predominant role in the holistic development of a child. Children learn so much through touch and sense in relation to how their bodies work in the environment they are in. Walking barefoot and exploring their feet’s reaction to different textures is not only fun, but helps to promote an awareness of their senses and their surroundings. For this, we exposed our Pipi room tamariki to the Sensory Walk.

Our sensory walkway started with a container filled with warm water, then the container with paint (red and green), then a cardboard, then came the bubble wrap, then a container with bubble bath, and it ended with a towel to dry their feet.

Once it was all setup, we invited our tamariki individually to go for the sensory walk. They stepped into different containers one by one and explored the different textures with their feet. As they were progressing through the walkway, we discussed the different textures such as wet, hard, soft, ticklish, and sensory attributes such as the temperature of the water (hot/warm/cold), how was the paint feeling on their feet (silky, squishy). There were a few children who didn’t like putting their feet in the water and the paint but they all loved popping the bubble wrap using their feet and stepping into the bubble water.

They really enjoyed and had a lot of fun exploring all the different textures using their feet as they took this sensory walk. This is a fun filled activity that I am sure you all can enjoy with your children at home to encourage their sensory exploration.
