Over the month of July, our under 2s have been busy exploring the benefits of sensory and messy play. One of the main mediums used is cornflour as it allows for the exploration of different textures. It can be explored dry or mixed with water to make a gloop, you can add colors and scents to this to catch the attention of other senses. Shaving foam also allows for the experience of textures and smells igniting our tamariki sense of smell and touch. Messy plays boast a range of benefits for our little ones such as:

It Fosters Curiosity, Imagination, and Exploration.

It Encourages Communication and Language Development.

It Practices Good Concentration and Nurtures Future Skills.

It Promotes Physical Development.

It Supports the Ability to Play Independently.

Our tamariki in our under2s love to explore the many different means of messy play. We have seen development in social skills and language as our little ones practice sharing and turn-taking. Our teaching team is always trying new ways of introducing different forms of sensory and messy play sometimes they seem to enjoy it more than the children. By using messy play we are embracing TeWhariki's strand Exploration where children learn strategies for active exploration, thinking, and reasoning.
