Here in the Kauri room at BestStart Elles Road, kaiako are supporting our tamariki to develop and strengthen their foundational skills to help prepare them for Kura/school. Set for School is our BestStart framework to support your child and prepare them for primary school and further learning. Set for School considers the unique needs of your child, family/whānau and the school they will attend.

It focuses on four areas that are key to your child growing up to be a competent and confident learners and communicators - healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society. All tamariki learn by engaging in meaningful interactions with people, places and things – a process that continues throughout their lifetimes.

Four areas of learning and development for school readiness are:

  • Taha Hinengaro - Cognitive Well-being Early Literacy Skills - Foundation skills for reading & writing, numeracy and mathematics Examples; print awareness, expresses ideas, sings songs, starting to count verbally and recognise some numbers, grouping, matching.
  • Taha Tinana - Physical Well-being Motor Skills Examples; able to run, jump, hop, hand and eye co-ordination activities.
  • Taha Wairua - Spiritual Well-being Social Emotional Skills Examples; self care skills such as dressing themselves, toilet independently, join into group activities, express themselves and their needs, knows their name and age.
  • Taha Whānau - Family Well-being Seeking Information Example; finding information on local schools, working in partnership with family to set learning goals/outcomes so that your child is ‘Set for School’.
