As part of our Set for School programme, six of our tamariki recently enjoyed an exciting visit to the South Library.
Our adventure began with a bus ride into the local community, providing valuable opportunities to develop independence, confidence, and an understanding of how we navigate the world around us.
At the library, tamariki explored the children's section, selected books that captured their interest, and spent time engaging with stories and print-rich resources. Library visits support early literacy development by fostering a love of reading, building vocabulary, strengthening listening and comprehension skills, and helping children understand that books are valuable tools for learning and discovery.
The experience also encouraged tamariki to make choices, follow routines in a public setting, and develop a sense of responsibility and respect for shared community spaces. Through meaningful interactions with each other and members of the community, they further strengthened their social skills and sense of belonging.
To conclude our outing, we enjoyed a fluffy at the café, providing another opportunity to practise communication skills, patience, and independence in a real-world setting.
We were so proud to see our tamariki demonstrating our Set for Kura values throughout the day: Whai Wāhi - actively participating and contributing, Whanaungatanga - building positive relationships and connections, Maia - showing confidence when exploring new experiences, Ākonga - embracing curiosity and a love of lifelong learning.
Excursions such as these provide rich learning opportunities beyond the centre environment, helping tamariki develop the confidence, literacy skills, and community connections that support a successful transition to school.
Ka mau te wehi tamariki mā, you represented our centre so proudly!
