At BestStart Otumoetai Montessori, we offer a warm, child-led environment where tamariki (children) are supported to grow into confident, capable learners—ready to take their next big step into primary school.
Our Montessori approach nurtures the whole child, with a strong focus on numeracy, language, independence, and social interaction.
These areas are thoughtfully woven into our daily programme to help children develop the essential skills they’ll need for a successful transition to school.
Numeracy:
Numeracy is introduced through hands-on materials that bring mathematical concepts to life. Materials like number rods, golden beads, and spindle boxes help tamariki explore quantity, order, and basic operations like addition and subtraction. These materials make abstract ideas tangible and fun, building a deep understanding of numbers from an early age. By the time they move into their first year of school, children already have a strong grasp of core numeracy skills and feel confident applying them in a classroom setting.
Language:
Language development is central to our Montessori programme. Through interactive materials like sandpaper letters and the moveable alphabet, children learn to link sounds to symbols and develop early reading and writing skills. They are also immersed in rich oral language through storytelling, singing, phonic games and conversation, which helps grow their vocabulary, self-expression and confidence. This strong literacy foundation means tamariki (children) begin school with well-developed communication skills and a love of language.
Independence:
We encourage children to take responsibility for themselves and their environment. At BestStart Otumoetai Montessori, children choose their own activities, care for their own belongings, and engage in everyday tasks like food preparation, cleaning, and dressing. These practical life skills not only develop fine motor control but also foster a sense of autonomy and community. Children leave us well-prepared for the routines and expectations of primary school life.
Social Interaction:
Our mixed-age classroom encourages respectful, caring relationships. Children learn to take turns, solve problems peacefully, and support one another—just like they will in a school setting. This community-focused environment helps children build empathy, resilience, and confidence in social situations, so they can form positive relationships with teachers and peers from day one.
