Our current Set for School focus has taken us into the wonderful world of storytelling, and our four-year-olds have absolutely embraced it!
Through familiar favourites such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Three Little Pigs, our tamariki have been drawing on their prior knowledge, creativity and imagination while developing important skills and dispositions that will support them as they transition to school.
Storytelling naturally weaves together so many areas of learning. Tamariki are strengthening their literacy and numeracy, recognising patterns and sequences, exploring new vocabulary, counting, predicting what might happen next and developing their ability to listen, concentrate and recall information.
We have been especially impressed by their growing ability to memorise familiar stories, retell events in sequence, recreate stories through play and confidently share their knowledge with others. Their learner agency has really shone through, with some children even taking on the role of kaiako and confidently leading their own mat times and storytelling sessions!
These playful experiences are building confident communicators, creative thinkers, capable leaders and lifelong learners.
