BestStart Parkside's Vision states, "Our Fun Happy Place", which then fosters better learning outcomes for our children through playful and fun activities. Research informs play is a pedagogical approach where play is the valued mode of learning. Here at BestStart Parkside children are provided with a rich learning environment, where they can explore, experiment, discover, and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways.

Kaiako introduced the dice as a medium to teach children number recognition, counting and having some active fun play with dice. Our $2 shops have large dices which can be used safely. Our planning Goals are integrated with activities we provide and where we like to foster active play in a safe manner, where children can learn some social skills of sharing, turn taking, listening and participating.

We have some very active children who sometimes need these kinds of activities to support their curious minds and active bodies. We have noticed children's interest in numbers, therefore to support this interest and making it more fun, what better resource to use then "dice". It was great to see how involved the children were with the dice game. First with the help of children we drew dice models on the concrete with chalk.

Chalk was rubbing off so we decided to paint the dice on the concrete. Many children showed interest and got involved enthusiastically in painting the dice models. This activity fostered some turn taking, waiting patiently for their turns, ignited conversations about the shape of the dice, how many dots altogether on the dice, discussing safety rules when rolling the dice, matching, counting and above all learning while having fun- all Set For School Skills.
