BestStart Rongotai had a meaningful 'Set for School Curriculum Sharing'
It focused on supporting tamariki as confident, capable learners, grounded in Te Whāriki and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, where relationships and rich experiences are at the heart of learning that supported play and developing our tamariki to be ready for School and Life!
Throughout the term, we planned purposeful play-based activities that wove together literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional areas. This year, we will be introducing 'learning baskets' to make intentional planning and teaching more visible.
These activities connect directly to Te Whāriki’s learning outcome, “Children recognise print and mathematical symbols and concepts and use them with confidence" together with our Set for School indicators focus on children’s growing ability to use language, symbols, and text, as well as thinking skills alongside self-help skills—a strong foundation for primary school.
Children enjoyed:
- Exploring print in their environment—finding and recognising their names and familiar words during routines and play.
- Using symbols and text in meaningful ways, such as writing ‘shopping lists’ in dramatic play and signing in for mat times.
- Engaging in joyful counting games, block building, and pattern activities to spark mathematical thinking. Investigating shapes, sizes, and measurement during rituals like kai time and water play.
- Becoming more confident in conducting self-help skills e.g. dressing and undressing independently
But building partnerships with our school community is the highlight of the event.
We welcomed guest speakers from Miramar Central, Miramar North, and St. Mark’s School. They shared insights with our families about what starting school looks like, answered questions, and helped whānau feel more connected to the local learning community.
Hearing directly from our future schools helps tamariki and their families see the transition journey ahead as exciting and positive. The commitment and enthusiasm from our kaiako, tamariki, and whanau made this a truly special day.
Tino pai te koutou!🫶
