Shadow Drawing
Use the sun to throw a shadow onto their paper or directly onto the concrete/surface they are drawing on, and watch them trace the silhouette.
• Large piece of paper
• Large piece of cardboard to put under the drawing paper
• Pens/crayons
• Several pegs (optional)
• Objects and toys
HOW TO DO IT
Provide a flat surface for your child to place their object and paper on. Place the paper in the sun with the shadow of a toy/object in front/above it. Encourage your child to draw around the outline of the shadow. You could stand over the paper and provide a shadow for your child to trace around. Try swapping so that you are the drawer and they create the shadow – standing in different poses will be fun, too!
WHAT LEARNING IS OCCURRING?
• Simple science concepts such as how the shadows are created by the sun and the changes that happen to shadows as clouds move across the sun
• Creativity
• Small muscle skills as your child holds the pen and traces around the shadow
TIPS
• As an alternative to paper and felt pens, find a concrete surface in the sun and use chalk for drawing.
• Don’t forget your hat and sunblock.
• On a windy day you may need pegs to clip your paper onto a backing board.
