In the Tui room at BestStart Omokoroa, we have been doing some amazing learning of shapes and letters. We have been working with paper mache as a medium to make shapes, and the letters of their names. For this, the children have been practicing their pinch technique to rip the paper. This has been beneficial for their budding dexterity. Then they use the paper to paste onto their formed shape.

We have discovered that tinfoil is an ideal base for moulding into shapes and letters. Once these are dry, they are then able to paint them for display in our room. They look super amazing as they show off all their hard mahi. We have also been doing lots of clay work. We have been learning techniques, such as: rolling and shaping, using slurry as glue, and roughing up the clay before attaching design elements to a base structure.

We have then been using these techniques in practice to make clay with intention. We made spirals to form a bowl, vases for our kai tables, and letters of our names which were then decorated. Having long term projects with added complexity has really supported their perseverance to complete these tasks. Our class room is looking truly amazing with all the creations.

Feel free to come check it out, and our planning wall where you will see more photos of the projects we have been working on.
