In the preschool room, we have had an interest in food and where our food products come from. After making a supermarket which promoted role play in the classroom the children began shopping for various items and talking about how they go shopping with their family members.

To extend this knowledge and understanding we walked down to the local supermarket. We explored the foods available as well as the prices. The children had written a shopping list together of the items we needed as well as how much they thought each item was going to cost. As we walked around the supermarket each child helped to gather one type of fruit each from the shelves to place in the basket. We handed over our reuseable shopping bags at the counter and all the lovely workers at the shop asked us questions as they complimented our food choices and helped to bag the selections.

We compared these prices of our items when we got back to preschool, the children were very close with most of their prices and in total we only spent $6.50 more than planned from our shopping list! We chopped up all the fruit, cooked the chicken nuggets and pizza to have a big picnic with all the goodies we purchased.

The children we very proud of the food they purchased, they even became more thoughtful about the waste of items that were not eaten because they had a part in the shopping process and cutting of all the various fruit and foods.
