Gardening in the Kauri room!

Here at preschool, we were all very busy as it was coming into spring the garden was getting prepped for planting. The tamariki and the Kaiako in the room had been discussing what we wanted to plant in the garden, this was a big decision, but we all decided on some delicious vegetables. This being, spinach, peas, silver beet and some juicy strawberries. By the time we are all back in the centre we are hoping we have some beautiful kai to eat! The photo on the bottom left is Victoria and some of the kauri tamariki putting some of our fresh produces on our Koha table for whanau to take home. These lettuces and green beans were picked by the tamariki then carefully wrapped in paper to protect the produce.

Emotions

Within the kauri room we felt it was important that we had a focus on “Emotions” this is something that we felt as a team is paramount for our tamariki. The tamariki have a lot of fun learning about emotions, it has also been fun having those conversations with them around how they are feeling and why we are feeling like that. Ria has a beautiful interactive display that the tamariki enjoy playing with to encourage and spark conversation between peers. Here we have Brody, Levi and Demi enjoying some Zen time, practicing some mediation… ahhh relaxing!

Emergency services

This was a huge hit! The months leading up to lockdown we had many New Zealand services come and visit the centre. This was a fantastic opportunity for our tamariki to engage in conversation with the front-line staff. It truly was an honour having the New Zealand police, Waiuku fire brigade, local coast guard and the St Johns come to visit us here at Best Start Waiuku. When these learning opportunities happen, it allows the tamariki to see up close what it’s like to be a front- line staff and ask any questions! In these photos we have St Johns showing the equipment they use daily and some books that explain different emergencies. And on the right, we have the local coast guard we were super lucky to be able to get on the boa they use out on the river! The tamariki were all in owe of this opportunity that’s for sure.
