Here at BestStart Mosgiel, our Sporty Shorties programme provides children with exciting opportunities to develop their physical skills through a fun, termly sports programme.
Each session focuses on building key gross motor skills, including jumping, running and balancing, alongside developing a wide range of ball skills such as throwing, catching and kicking.
These sessions are designed to support our children to grow in confidence as they move their bodies in new and challenging ways. Through the group activities, children also strengthen important social skills, they learn to take turns, cooperate with others, and celebrate each other’s achievements.
Movement and physical play are essential to children’s wellbeing, and our Sporty Shorties programme aligns closely with Te Whāriki.
In particular, it reflects the strands of Wellbeing | Mana Atua, as children gain confidence in their physical abilities, and Exploration | Mana Aotūroa, where they actively engage in developing coordination, control, and spatial awareness. Our tamariki absolutely love the chance to be active, energetic, and engaged in purposeful movement.
Sporty Shorties not only supports healthy bodies, but also nurtures confident, capable learners who are ready to explore their world, build resilience, form friendships, and develop a lifelong love of movement and active play.
