It has been an eggciting start to November at Best Start Pleasant Point with the arrival of four little fluffy chicks from our centre hen Daisy. Daisy has been quietly sitting on eggs for the past 21 days while the tamariki have been waiting in anticipation for the baby chicks arrival. Egg collection hasn’t quite been the same while Daisy has been sitting on them!

The tamariki were starting to get a little concerned about Daisy as some days she only hoped off her nest once for a quick drink, poop and forage for food. Yesterday there was lots of excitement as she arrived outside of her box with four black fluffy little chicks in tow. Fostering the children’s interest and knowledge about caring for animals and the natural world is a big part of our culture here at Pleasant Point.

Today the tamariki were fascinated learning how Daisy taught her chicks how to forage for food. Daisy was even picking Daisy’s then feeding them to her chicks! The tamariki learnt the chicks keep warm and safe by tucking themselves under Daisy’s wings. They will rely on the heat of Daisy until they are around 8 weeks old. Everybody then enjoyed the opportunity to give one of Daisy’s chicks a little pat.
