This week outside we have been noticing the effects of the spring weather in our outdoor environment, the Wisteria is in bloom and we have blossom on the tree.  Unfortunately this also means the weeds are having growth spurts and popping up everywhere.  Thankfully we have lots of helpers in the garden which makes light work of the weeding.

Care of the environment is an important aspect of our programme in the Koru Room and it helps children to develop a sense of mana whenua and to take ownership of their learning environment.  Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori philosophy we incorporate in our center thought that it was important for children to be immersed in nature and real life activities just like the weeding we have been doing.  This also links to the Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whá¾±riki through the strands of Belonging and Exploration.
