Kia ora whanau!

This month Home of the Brave celebrated 8 years of Powells Road Kindy! Our talented kaiako facilitated a “Spring into Spring” celebration. To acknowledge; the success of the past 8 years, the school holidays, the changing seasons and the hard mahi and dedication it takes to run the centre on a day-to-day basis, our kaiako decided to commemorate this occasion by giving our community garden a facelift.

Our kaupapa for this is to provide our community with a shared space. A space for whanau to embrace Papatuānuku (Maori Mother of the Earth) and Rongo-mā-tane (Maori God of cultivation and peace) as tamariki, kaiako and whanau came together in kotahi-tanaga (unity) to create an environment to share in the fruits of our labour in the form of a community kai garden. We have sown seeds, planted seedlings and weeded the garden in hope of a fruitful harvest in the near future.
Gardening is an easy way for our tamariki to learn to be the kaitiaki of our place, identifying and looking after environments and learning how their world works. Here at Home of the Brave our tamariki are currently fascinated by all types of pāpapa (Bugs) and are learning how bugs contribute to the circle of life in the garden. This supports the Mana Aoturoa (Exploration) strand of Te whariki, the national curriculum for all Early childhood.
