In BestStart South Road's Infant Room one of our interests is music and movement. We decided to experiment with an art activity that introduced new sounds and vocabulary, creating a rich language opportunity. 

The activity involved spraying dye on paper. Nga tamariki (children) first had to learn how to co ordinate holding the bottle and squeeze the bottle trigger to squirt the dye. First was a two handed method, then as confidence and coordination grew nga tamariki were able to hold the bottle and use the trigger with one hand. This showed great fine motor skills and strengthening of the hands. As we were squirting the dye onto the paper we discussed the colours we saw, the bubbles in the dye and the sharp hiss sound the squirt of dye made. We then played with the nozzle of the bottle and discovered a fine spray, creating a mist on our paper. We spoke about how this sound was softer than the other. 

This activity links into our music focus by describing how sounds can be loud and soft and by focussing on what we can hear around us. Nga tamariki loved this activity, learning how to use the spray bottle and all the words and sounds that happened.
