Starting our year off with Water Play!
For some tamariki it was a long break from the centre and rejoining after a while we thought they would require quite a bit of support to re settle.
As a team we discussed what activities we could set up for tamariki to enjoy and water play was a common suggestion.
We were not wrong – Water play has approved an absolute HIT with children and whanau alike.
The weather has been in our favour and tamariki have a been great with remembering to apply sunblock, remembering their potaes/hats and reminding their parents to bring in togs and towels. Nga tamariki and teachers have shared their much-deserved time away and we noticed that a lot of whanau spent time at the beach or camping near water.
We korero/talk about water safety and activities that are appropriate around water.
Spinklers and water slides have featured in our water play whilst children are singing and dancing. Running through the droplets and perfecting our knee-slides has been a great way to cool down in the hot afternoons.
Our children explore and learn about water through regular opportunities at the centre to engage with this natural element. Splashing in the water, pouring water with containers, watering the plants in our garden and children's all-time favourite are bubbles.
Water play supports children to develop their hand-eye coordination, learn to lift, pour, and control water, understand measuring, estimating and volume, understand heavy/light, float/sink and shallow/deep.
