In Te Pihinga and Te Atawhai Rooms we have been enjoying impromptu story mat times.

These mat times usually stem from one or more of our tamariki bringing a book over to our kaiako to read. This attracts more and more tamariki to come over and before you know it there is a group enjoying our stories. Some of our favourite stories are from our CD books and sometimes we will hear the children sing the tune to these songs while they play.

Reading stories together is a great way for our tamariki to learn about the connection between the words that are said and the words written on the page. It also increases vocabulary as our tamariki are hearing different words that we might not normally be using.

We also read stories from different cultures and some of our most read stories are in Te Reo Maori. It is a great social time to sit with a group of friends, enjoying the different stories.
