At BestStart Kauri Flats, we are committed to celebrating our centre priorities by building meaningful partnerships with our families and wider community.
During Samoan Language Week earlier this year, we were privileged to welcome one of our whānau members, who generously shared their cultural knowledge with our tamariki through engaging music, storytelling, dance and interactive cultural experiences. This special mat time created authentic opportunties for children to learn about Samoan traditions while strengthening the connections between our centre and the families we serve.
These experiences reflect our centre philosophy of whanaungatanga - working in partnership, nurturing mutual relationships and and fostering meaningful interactions with families and the community. Through these shared experiences, our tamariki develop respect for diverse cultures, values and traditions while gaining a deeper appreciation of the rich cultural diversity within Aotearoa New Zealand.
Alongside this, we have continued to deepen our understanding of te ao Māori through hands-on learning experiences that explore the significance of Māori practices and symbols. One meaningful example has been harakeke (flax) weaving. Tamariki learned the importance of beginning with karakia before harvesting flax and carefully wove each leaf to create flowers, stars, and traditional Māori kites. These experiences foster manaakitanga, encouraging children to show respect, care and appreciation for the beliefs, values and traditions of others.
