We have had a wonderful month celebrating Summer here at BestStart Mahora. We have been having lots of fun water play, doing lots of exploring of our wonderful Papatūānuku by hunting for snails and creating potions. We also have been enjoying our healthy lunchboxes and sharing and supporting our friends through their learning.

Children are engaged in nature whenever they are learning about the world around them. This sort of play allows children to develop a perception of themselves as ‘explorers’ – competent, confident learners who ask questions and make discoveries.

Charlotte, Madden and Ollie are the resident bug hunters here at BestStart Mahora and they are always keen to look after Papatūānuku and her creatures. They pick the snails up ever so gently and place them on their arms. Often staying there for the whole day!  Nature and our world has so much to share with our children.

Marnie, Ladycee, Madden, Japji and Zara have enjoyed making potions with our herbs in our garden. We have discovered that our orange tree has wonderful smelling leaves and have been mixing these with lavender and basil from our garden. We also have been mixing in our celery leaves. The children have absolutely enjoyed exploring their senses with these great potions and it is encouraging fine motor skills with the mortar and pestle crushing.

We have recently made the decision to switch to lunchboxes here at Mahora and the children have loved discussing their healthy choices with their friends. The tuakana have been supporting our teina with opening their food in their lunchboxes. Tuakana Teina is such an important aspect of learning here and we love that our children are helping each other with their learning and development.

We really love and embrace moments like these here at BestStart Mahora, where the children lead the way and show us what they are wanting to learn and discover.
