To welcome our tamariki back in January 2022, we held a “Super Soaker” day for each room. We had a splash pad with sprinklers in infants, where children were able to gain confidence in and around water. We had an awesome rainbow sprinkler where children could run under keep cool as well as a hopscotch sprinkler. Our tamariki were able to actively explore as they further developed their eye-hand coordination skills. There was a lot of communication happening, as friendships were forming amongst the children as they shared ideas and cooperated together. There were also water activities set up so there was space for everyone to explore and have fun! Children actively explored scooping, pouring and mixing water around in their containers. They also learnt about what floats and what sinks, what is heavy and what is light.

We also had a face paint activity where children got the opportunity to choose what they would like to be, they used their voice and were heard as they transformed into their favourite character. Our tamariki had fun and acted out their characters through role play, gaining self-confidence, connecting with the wider world and sharing their knowledge and ideas with their friends. They were also developing their problem-solving skills, and communication skills as they discussed, planned and negotiated ideas while building friendships. Our tamariki also explored their feelings by learning to deal with different emotions and to express how they feel.

To support our Tongan Community within our centre, kaiako invited our whanau to participate in collecting non-perishable food and other items to send to families in Tonga, who had been affected by the Volcanic Eruption. This was a huge success as our whanau participated and contributed selflessly to help those in need, once we had collected these items kaiako took them down to Mt Smart Stadium where they were put into large barrels, then put into a large container ready to be shipped to Tonga. On the last day of this collection, we all dressed in Red as a centre, to show our support and love for our Tongan Families within our centre and community.
