We have been spending a lot of time outside at BestStart Waihi Kindy now the weather has settled into an absolutely gorgeous summer! It's been very hot in the afternoons so we have been making the most of the slightly cooler mornings to search for strawberries, paint rocks, pick flowers to make dough gardens, play on the water slide and play in the sandpit.

The children love to look for strawberries in our strawberry patch. The shrieks of delight alert us to the fact that they have found some red, ripe strawberries in our strawberry patch. The children help to look after the strawberries by watering them, collecting worm wee from our worm farms that they also care for.

The children have also been learning about sustainability and recycling. They now sort their lunch left overs and packaging into specially marked bins, one for landfill, one for recycling and one for worm farm and chickens. They know what the worms like to eat and take the food scraps down to the worm farm to feed the worms.

We also have a fabulous community garden that is growing very well! We have tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, courgettes, corn and potatoes growing in it. The children love to come and harvest the vegetables with a teacher for guidance. Fantastic learning for our tamariki!
