As the weather warms up at BestStart Flat Bush, our Pēpi Room has been embracing all the wonderful opportunities that spring and summer bring.
With the sun shining a little brighter each day, our tamariki have been spending more time exploring the outdoor environment. It has been wonderful to watch their curiosity and confidence grow alongside the changing season.
Outdoor play offers so much more than fresh air. It supports gross motor development as children crawl, cruise and take those early wobbly steps across different textures, including grass, sand, colourful scarves and soft mats.
It also stimulates the senses through sunlight, gentle breezes, natural sounds and new smells. Outdoor play gives our youngest children the freedom and space to move their bodies in ways that the indoor environment cannot always offer.
Over the past few weeks, our tamariki have been exploring the natural environment together by feeling leaves, listening to birds and discovering the different textures of the garden.
We have also introduced outdoor sensory play experiences, including sand exploration, water play and natural loose parts. These activities give children the opportunity to touch, squeeze, pour and investigate at their own pace.
What has stood out most, however, is the friendship blossoming between our pēpi. Sitting side by side, reaching for the same toy and sharing a giggle over crunching leaves are small but meaningful moments that help build the foundations of social connection and trust.
At our Flat Bush early learning centre, we value these everyday opportunities for infants to learn, explore and grow alongside one another. Every day brings a new adventure, supporting children to develop confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging.
