Here at Montessori Otumoetai, in recognition of Earth Day 2023 we have been reading lots of different stories about how to protect our nature, keep our living environments alive, and keep our oceans thriving.

We went for walks around our community looking at the local drains and reading the slogan “drains only for rain” as it leads to our sea. We had in-depth conversations at our mat times by talking about protecting our forests, trees, plants, sea creatures, and animals so we can live with clean oceans, air, and food. We also discussed how we can help to preserve our planet Earth for many more generations to come.

The next step in our learning of protecting our planet Earth is an excursion to purchase new plants to plant around Montessori Otumoetai to sustain our flourishing fauna and flora helping to keep our air clean. To invest in looking after our planet, we have been talking about doing a rubbish clean-up day equipped with rubbish grabbers to clean up our community. There has been lots of learning at our centre on how to sustain and invest in our planet Earth.

“The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the earth”. - Maria Montessori
