Supporting Independence from the Very Beginning

At Montessori Kilbirnie, we believe every child is capable, competent, and eager to learn.

In our Casa classroom, tamariki are supported to develop independence and self-help skills that build confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of belonging.

A wonderful example of this is our daily arrival routine. When children first transition into Casa, kaiako guide them through each step, including carrying their bag, hanging up their jacket, placing their bag on a hook, putting their lunchbox on the shelf, and neatly storing their shoes.

While these tasks may seem small, they play an important role in helping children gain confidence and independence. It is always rewarding to see how quickly tamariki learn and remember the routine. What begins as a supported experience soon becomes something they can do independently, with a real sense of pride and achievement. These daily routines help children develop responsibility, self-management, and confidence.

Once ready, they can independently choose mahi and engage in meaningful learning experiences. This reflects the Montessori philosophy, where practical life experiences help children develop independence, coordination, concentration, and a sense of order. Through these everyday tasks, tamariki also strengthen their self-help skills and grow in confidence as capable learners.
