Supporting our community during Christmas
At BestStart Glenfield we support the principles of Family and Community by believing the wider world of family and community is a valued and key part of our curriculum. As a centre we have been working with our tamariki to learn more about our community and how we can support those less fortunate than ourselves.
This Christmas we decided to do a food drive for the Salvation Army where tamariki and whanau could bring in donations that we could then drop off before Christmas for families needing a food parcel. This was a great example of manaakitanga as the tamariki actively showed aroha for others through kindness and generosity.
The tamariki were able to have discussions with their peers at group times around what they had brought in then lead onto a discussion with the kaiako around the joy of giving and the meaning of Christmas and how it's more than Santa but about bringing joy to others and how by giving you are making the difference in somebody's life; this builds empathy and compassion.
We are looking forward to following this community support into 2024 as we continue to learn more about the world around us and what we can do to be valued members of our community.
