Just before lockdown, BestStart Kawaha Point fundraised for our local SPCA by making cupcakes. We received over $170 for our cupcakes, and we wanted to do more. With help from our whanau, pet food and old towel/blankets were collected the week of lockdown.

Last week Vanessa from SPCA came and collected the money and goods. She said that the pets in care would benefit so much from this as lockdown had affected the centre. This visit was a little different from previous collections as she had to keep her distance and wear a mask. We all assembled on the steps for the presentation and to learn a little about what the SPCA does. It was also Pyjama dress up day for the birthday of one of our tamariki.

We like to get involved with our community and supporting others and it was awesome being able to help the SPCA with our donations.

To extend on our learning about our community and helping our local SPCA, we also had a visitor to the centre. Luna (Yvette’s pup) came in to have a play with the tamariki and to help them extend their empathy skills. They learnt to get down to her level, talk quietly and to take turns patting her and taking her for a walk. We discussed what needs Luna required, such as food, water and where does she sleep? The tamariki are looking forward to having another play date later on.
